The science

Preserving living genetic material

Cell preservation, sometimes called genetic preservation, grows living dermal fibroblasts from a small routine skin biopsy. Fibroblasts are the gold standard cell type for somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), the scientific term for cloning. The cells are then cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen at −320 °F (−196 °C), where they stay viable indefinitely.

Preservation happens today, in your clinic. Cloning is an entirely separate, optional decision the pet parent may make years later, or never.

What cloning is

SCNT uses the preserved fibroblasts to create an embryo that develops into a genetically identical animal, carrying the same physical characteristics, coat pattern and genetic traits as the original pet.

What cloning is not

It does not recreate the same individual. Personality, learned behavior and individual quirks develop through unique life experience. Pet parents should understand they would be welcoming a genetic twin, not resurrecting their pet.

Critical time window

Sample collection must happen within roughly 5 days of passing, with the body refrigerated at 35 to 39 °F (2 to 4 °C). Temperature is decisive: warmer conditions shorten this window sharply, while prompt refrigeration extends cell viability.

For best results: collect the biopsy ante-mortem from a terminally ill pet. Post-mortem collection also works if the body was refrigerated right away.

Three points worth repeating

If a pet parent remembers nothing else from the conversation, these are the three points that decide whether preservation stays possible.

Never freeze the body or the sample

Freezing destroys cell viability and eliminates every future option. Refrigerate only, at 35 to 39 °F.

The window is short

Roughly five days post-mortem when properly refrigerated. Immediate refrigeration maximizes the chance of success.

Ante-mortem is better

For terminally ill pets, a biopsy taken before passing gives the highest cell quality and the widest margin.

Common questions

What veterinarians ask us

Is this appropriate for all my clients?
No, and it should not be offered that way. The service is built for a specific subset of highly attached pet parents who struggle significantly with loss. Offering it to everyone would misread the moment for most families.
How do I introduce the option?
Naturally, during end-of-life planning with a client showing signs of anticipatory grief: “There is an option for preserving genetic material that some pet parents find comforting…” That is all that is required of you.
What are the ethical considerations?
Cell preservation itself is closely analogous to human fertility preservation. Cloning raises separate ethical questions, which clients are free to explore on their own, and years later, if they ever choose to pursue it.
What does the biopsy involve?
A standard skin biopsy taken in sterile conditions, placed in a sterile tube with sterile saline and kept refrigerated. No specialized equipment and no additional training. We provide the full written protocol and are available by phone during collection.
Where is the laboratory?
In the United States, so there is no international shipping and no customs paperwork for you or your client. Overnight courier from anywhere in the country.
Who talks to the client about money?
We do. Billing, contracts, storage renewals and any later conversation about cloning are handled entirely by Bimini Pet. Your practice receives its $500 without administering the client relationship.

Who is behind Bimini Pet

Dr François-Xavier Pellay, PhD

Dr François-Xavier Pellay is a research scientist who has spent more than twenty years on why cells age and what can be done about it. He has discovered new molecules, developed methods to restore function in aging cells, and today leads Bimini Biotech, where that research continues in AFI+, an autologous fibroblast therapy. Fibroblasts, the cells preserved here, are the cell type he has worked with longest.

Bimini Pet came out of the limits of that work. Aging science is moving, but not fast enough for the animal in front of you today. Preserving living cells is what can be done now, while the rest catches up.

He founded the service four years ago and has spoken with more than a hundred families since, most of them at the point in a pet's life where you meet them.
