Most pet parents have never heard of cell preservation. Your role is simply to let highly attached clients know the option exists, particularly when discussing end-of-life planning for an aging or terminally ill pet. We handle everything that follows, including all client communication.
Cell preservation, sometimes called genetic preservation, grows living dermal fibroblasts from a small routine skin biopsy. Fibroblasts are the gold standard cell type for somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), the scientific term for cloning. The cells are then cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen at −320 °F (−196 °C), where they stay viable indefinitely.
Preservation happens today, in your clinic. Cloning is an entirely separate, optional decision the pet parent may make years later, or never.
SCNT uses the preserved fibroblasts to create an embryo that develops into a genetically identical animal, carrying the same physical characteristics, coat pattern and genetic traits as the original pet.
It does not recreate the same individual. Personality, learned behavior and individual quirks develop through unique life experience. Pet parents should understand they would be welcoming a genetic twin, not resurrecting their pet.
Sample collection must happen within roughly 5 days of passing, with the body refrigerated at 35 to 39 °F (2 to 4 °C). Temperature is decisive: warmer conditions shorten this window sharply, while prompt refrigeration extends cell viability.
For best results: collect the biopsy ante-mortem from a terminally ill pet. Post-mortem collection also works if the body was refrigerated right away.
